This message goes out to anyone who?s seeks technical assistance and leaves absolutely no details on initial contact. This isn?t a rant about any one individual, rather a point of view from someone who values time. I?ve been writing computer programs for over twenty years and I?m still amazed when a busy individual calls and leaves the message; ?I?ve got a problem with my computer, please call me?.
This is ridiculous, since there is absolutely no level of preparation that I can take to fix the problem. More times than not, I call back and leave the message; ?What sort of problem are you experiencing? When was the last time it was working properly? Did anything change on your system?? Now, two phones and who knows how many hours or days have passed, and we?ve both gone nowhere. This is particularly bad when the problem could have been solved by a single email or phone message.
It?s actually quite simple. Collect your thoughts prior to dialing as you would when dialing ?911?. When dialing 911 you?re prepared to describe (in detail), the problem, location and any other significant details that enables first responders to address the situation appropriately. Even though the computer issue isn?t an emergency, you owe it to yourself, and your support team to address downtime time more effectively.
